The Modern Fireplace for Passive & Low-Energy Homes

Passive and low-energy homes are engineered to retain heat exceptionally well. High levels of insulation, airtight construction and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) systems dramatically reduce heating demand, often meaning just 2–3kW of heat is needed to keep a home comfortable and cosy. For many homeowners, that raises an obvious question: can I still have a real fireplace?

Modern room-sealed fireplaces have been designed to work in harmony with modern, energy-efficient homes. Far removed from traditional open fires, they provide complete combustion control, preserve the home's airtight envelope and allow you to enjoy the atmosphere of a real flame without overwhelming the space with excess heat.

Rather than acting as the primary heating appliance, our sealed fireplaces become an architectural feature; a striking focal point that brings warmth, character and ambience to a home.

Designed for Modern Homes

Traditional fireplaces and open fires are understandably incompatible with modern airtight construction. They draw heated air from the room, create draughts and can interfere with the carefully balanced airflow within the home. Modern sealed fireplaces are completely different.

Using a balanced flue system, combustion air is drawn directly from outside while all exhaust gases are expelled externally. No room air is consumed, no draughts are created, and the integrity of the home's airtight design is maintained.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that a wood-burning fireplace will overheat a highly insulated home. In reality, these fireplaces are designed to be exceptionally controllable, allowing the fire to be turned down to produce a gentle, ambient warmth alongside the visual enjoyment of a real flame.

Rather than continuously producing large amounts of heat, they can be operated at a comfortable output that perfectly matches the low heating demand of a passive home. The result is a fireplace that creates atmosphere first and foremost, while providing a subtle background warmth that never dominates the living space.

When greater heat is required (perhaps during exceptionally cold weather or in the event of a power cut), the fireplace can simply be topped up with extra logs to deliver significantly more warmth.

You can even see in the diagram below explaining how the balanced, efficience flue works:

More Than Heat

For most passive-home owners, the decision to include a fireplace isn't driven by heating demand. It means they can own a beautiful centrepiece that complements their home, with the option of extra heat when needed.

A beautifully designed Caleo fireplace naturally becomes the focal point of a room, bringing family and friends together while adding warmth.

Biophilic Design

This connection with natural elements, often referred to as biophilic design, is increasingly recognised by architects and interior designers for its positive impact on wellbeing. In homes where every material, finish and detail has been carefully considered, the fireplace is often the feature that transforms a beautifully built house into a truly welcoming home.

The Ultimate off-grid heating solution

Passive homes rely heavily on electrical systems such as heat pumps, MVHR and underfloor heating. While these are incredibly efficient options, they all depend on power.

A wood-burning fireplace offers something entirely different…

One of our passive-house customers contacted us following a prolonged power cut in January 2025. With no electricity available, the first thing they did was light their Slimfocus fireplace. Despite freezing conditions outside, the fireplace comfortably heated the home until power was restored, providing warmth and reassurance when every other heating system was offline.

It's a reminder that alongside beauty and ambience, a real wood fire remains one of the few genuinely off-grid heating solutions available. All that's required is dry logs and a box of matches.
